The Papadimitriou Apartment Building in Kalamaria is a reconstruction project that reinterprets a residential structure originally erected in 1991, transforming it into a contemporary dwelling aligned with modern standards of comfort, technology, and spatial quality. The architectural intervention redefines both the building’s organization and its material identity, allowing it to respond to current modes of urban living.
Originally developed as a series of maisonettes, the building has been reconfigured into five full-floor apartments, each spanning the entire level. This shift in typology enhances spatial continuity, privacy, and daylight access, while enabling more generous and flexible interior layouts. The redesign prioritizes functionality and clarity, creating residences that feel open, cohesive, and suited to everyday use.
Materiality plays a central role in establishing a sense of domestic warmth and refinement. Timber is extensively used in custom furniture, spatial dividers, and bedroom flooring, introducing tactility and reinforcing the feeling of home. In contrast, luxurious marble tiles are applied in bathrooms and living room floors, offering smooth, clean finishes that elevate the overall atmosphere and add a layer of understated elegance.
Textiles are carefully integrated as a key design element. Soft fabrics contribute to acoustic comfort and visual calm, while selectively introducing color accents that enrich the otherwise restrained palette. Large openings framed in black metal define the threshold between interior spaces and the spacious front balconies. These frames act as strong architectural elements, emphasizing the transition from private to semi-outdoor living while allowing abundant natural light to penetrate deep into the apartments.
