Located at Garmpola Street 8, in the historic center of Thessaloniki, the project concerns the restoration and adaptive reuse of a heritage eclectic building, reimagined to accommodate 11 contemporary residential units. The building comprises a basement, ground floor, three upper floors, a recessed fourth floor, and a pitched roof. The intervention included the repair and conservation of the façades, a complete reconfiguration of the interior layouts, and the addition of an external glass elevator on the rear elevation.
The façade is defined by symmetry, decorative relief bands, recessed plasterwork, and ornate corbels beneath the balconies, articulating its eclectic character, while recessed window frames enhance depth and shadow. New wooden window frames that are placed respect the original typology. Internally, wooden flooring is used in private areas, while mosaic floors and cement tiles are restored in common spaces. The apartments feature clean lines, soft neutral tones, and functional open-plan layouts that enhance natural light and spatial continuity. Decorative plaster ceilings are preserved as carriers of the building’s memory, engaging in dialogue with contemporary lighting and furnishings. In the bathrooms, small-scale ceramic tiles and geometric patterns add texture and character.
The project balances heritage conservation and contemporary living, resulting in a refined residential environment that feels modern yet intrinsically connected to its historic architectural shell.
